"Fluorides in the oral environment"

Fluorides have been the corner stone for caries prevention in the past decades. The working modes of fluoride have been disclosed and this has led to a more rationale usage of agents and products. Fluoride was shown to interfere mainly with the mineral balance at the tooth surface - oral cavity interface, by inhibiting dissolution of mineral when acids are formed in the dental plaque (demineralization). During in between meal periods fluorides stimulate the repair of caries dental tissues by enhancing the mineral deposition from saliva (remineralization). Fluorides were shown to work topically rather than systemic, and this explains the superior efficacy of fluoride toothpastes. High frequency of fluoride administration is beneficial, again favouring toothpastes or fluoride slow release devices over professional semi-annual topical treatments. In addition to the abovementioned topics, various types of fluoride agents and products will be discussed.

"Non-operative treatment of dental caries"

During many years dental caries has been healed by operative treatment. However, the limited benefit of the operative treatment to individuals' oral health has incited researchers and private practitioners to reconsider this approach. This reconsideration was followed by a series of studies which promoted a better understanding of the initiation, development and arrest of dental caries at sub-clinical and clinical levels. Thus, non-operative treatment of dental caries was introduced as scientific based approach to control further disease progression. The non-operative treatment of dental caries will be illustrated by some clinical cases.

"Longevity of restorations and reasons for their placement and replacement in the primary and permanent dentition"

In many European countries the environmental and health authorities have put increasing pressure on dentists during the last decades to get them to reduce the use of dental amalgam. The consequences of the altered treatment patterns for the longevity of restorations and the reasons for replacement of restorations in the primary and permanent dentition have been investigated in various longitudinal and cross-sectional studies. The lecture will present and discuss the results
